Celebrating Women's Month: Diversity, History and Commitment

In a world where diversity and equality are fundamental values, Women's Month represents an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the challenges we still face in the fight for gender equality. In this blog, we will explore the history behind March 8, International Women's Day and we highlight the importance of celebrating diversity in all its forms and in all companies.

History of International Women's Day

Although the movements became known much more strongly in the 20th century, women's efforts to live in a more egalitarian world go back a long time:

  • In 1848 , outraged by the prohibition that prevented women from speaking at an anti-slavery convention, North Americans Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott gathered hundreds of people at the first national convention for women's rights" in New York, indicates the ONU.

  • On February 28, 1909, the first National Women's Day was commemorated in the United States.

  • In 1910 , the Second International Conference of Socialist Women was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. In this conference, hundreds of women from 17 countries participated, who decided to "organize an annual women's day with the aim of reinforcing their fight to obtain universal women's suffrage," says the UN.

  • On March 25, 1911 , 123 women died in the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company textile factory, which operated in a building in New York, from which they could not escape since their employers ordered the doors to be closed during working hours. .

  • On Sunday , February 23, 1917 , women in Russia went "on strike to demand 'bread and peace'" as a form of protest against the 2 million Russian soldiers killed in the First World War.

And why March 8?

The relationship with March 8 is in the calendars : in Russia, the Julian calendar was used and in Europe the Gregorian. The day of the historic women's demonstration was measured under the Julian calendar; That same date, but in the Gregorian calendar, was March 8.

After the Second World War, March 8 began to take center stage in many countries even before being recognized by the UN, in 1977, as International Women's Day.
